Enfield CC v Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club 1st XI on Sun 28 Apr 2013 at 1pm
Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Won by 67 runs

Match report A GLITTERING century from captain Arfan Akram got Wanstead Cricket Club off to a winning start in the ECB National Club Championship. The opener struck 18 fours and two sixes in his 118 as the Herons posted a formidable 285-8 in their opening Group 14 clash with Enfield.

Last season’s runners-up always looked on course for victory and, after Enfield had made a bright start in their chase, Wanstead ground down their opposition and cruised to a 67-run win.

Having won the toss and elected to bat Akram took the game to the hosts’ opening bowlers and, along with Essex youngster Rehan Hassan, put on more than 100 for the first wicket. After a slight wobble when Hassan (24) and England U19 international Kishen Velani (8) both fell to the bowling of Syed Karrar, bat continued to dominate ball as Petrus Hattingh joined his skipper at the crease.
The South African produced some lusty blows in his 42 as the pair added exactly 100 for the third wicket. Hattingh was eventually caught by Tony Sayers off the bowling of Asad Shah soon after Akram was himself dismissed by the same bowler.

With Wanstead in search of quick runs wickets started to tumble and wicketkeeper Jonathan Das, Adnan Akram and Adam Lord all fell in quick succession. However, a useful 25 from Matt Smith ensured the visitors posted a total that, in helpful conditions, always looked as though it would be too much for Enfield.

That view was questioned at the start of the home side’s reply however, as openers Neil Tilley and Jack Plumb went on the attack, taking advantage of the fielding restrictions to post 64 before Tilley was caught behind by Das off the bowling of Shahid Saeed.

From then on though, while Plumb continued to attack, Enfield lost wickets at regular intervals as the Wanstead spinners turned the screw. Hassan picked up 2-29 from his nine overs while veteran twirler Mohammed Fayyaz Khan showed once again that age is merely a number taking 2-28 himself in a match-winning spell. When Plumb was bowled by Velani for 87 the game was up for Enfield and, although they fought valiantly until the end, closed well short on 218-8.
