Match report After a mystifying number of date and ground changes, Afghanistan eventually agreed to play at the Hainault and Clayhall ground at Redbridge. Batting first, Wanstead suffered the unaccustomed shock of losing Tom and Feroze to the 4th and 5th balls of the first over, courtesy of Sameen, an ex-Wanstead player himself. However, an excellent recovery followed with Hassan (25), Bilal (21), Ishmail (45) and Adam (37) taking Wanstead to 139 for 4. Afghanistan bowled well but in dropping Adam in the last few overs, may have sealed their fate.

The Afghan team raced to 45 off the first 4 overs and were understandably optimistic (and quite vocal) about the outcome. However, wickets now began to fall, first to Jayden then Finlay, Jansher and Nabeel. The team set an example in the field they may be pushed to equal, taking 4 steepling catches in the deep (Feroze 3, Jayden 1) and a hard pull to Hassan that was well taken below his knees. Needing 12 off the last over with 9 wickets down, they managed only 2, giving Wanstead a 9 run win.

This was a hard contest against an unbeaten side and the Wanstead players showed true strength of purpose and character. Led by Hassan, they demonstrated a level of self-belief that will stand them well in the season ahead. This was a match that was effectively won in the field as dropping any of the seven catches that were taken could very easily have left the opposition an opportunity to steal the game. Very, very well done!
