Walthamstow CC v Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club C Indoor Team on Sat 28 Jan 2017 at 11.00am
Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Lost by a country mile and a load of runs

Match report THe match reporter has not been around for a while and so the previous matches have not really been seen or reported on. But todays match will live long in the annuls of Wanstead CC. The memory of this match will require therapy for those that watched that Wantead Batting performance. However, lets us start with the goodnews. Wanstead C (on their first outing in the Saturday league) have made it to the plate semi final. Many congratulations boys. I dont know how you did it, played three lost three. I have been reliably informed that it was our run rate that got us through. The run rate being calculated at the score on the board in the second over. Well for whatever reason, another Wanstead team reaches a semi final.
A couple more bits of thansk have to go out today, firstly to Nefeesa Aziz. Who was woken up by her father and told, "youre playing for the oldest team in the league, so get up", Nafeesa the bowler who took a wicket in her first over and then was dropped. Not only was Nafeesa taken off of bowling duties, but while she was bowling, her Dad decided to miss a simple catch off of Nafeesa's bowling. I can imagine that the conversations going home between Nafeesa and golfing legend* Ibrahim were one sided, or even apologetic. Nafeesa, the team still thanks you for the effort you made, and you were by far the best player on the field.
Further thanks have to go to Gerard Durcan, a stalwart of the 7XI and slowcoaches. Wow 7XI, what a blast from the past. It was a pleasure see you play your first indoor match since you were 17. You were the fasted Wanstead player there. Now the rest of you need to learn something from that. Running indoors is something that can happen and now that youve seen it, perhaps you might consider trying it in the future?, or is that asking too much.

Preamble over...to the match report

When I get back from Chinese New Year.

And what a New year it was...Welcome to the year of the Rooster. Back to the match.

Right, Jim was the designated Capt this time and the first thing he did was make the wrong call in the toss. So we batted second. The big shining performances in the field were Nafeesa's bowling, she got a wicket. The rest of you kept the wicket keeper busy with the wides. Even the fill in keeper (Ibrahim) was left embarrassed when he failed to catch a thick edge off of his daughters bowling...shame on you Ibrahim. Okay so he missed a couple of other sitters, he was only filling in. When the regular keeper returned it was normal service resumed and nothing got passed him. He was on tip top form. Anyway, with some excellent bowling Walthamstow were very disappointed when they saw the total they had set Wanstead. They were disappointed only to have set Wanstead 155 to win (In 12 overs). I mean they were looking at some parts of the innings to be aiming for 250 considering some of the stuff that was chucked, oops sorry meant to say bowled, but my figures couldn't type it. They don't do "alternative truth". So once the total had been set all Wanstead had to do was get to 155 and win the match.

With a run rate of 12 an over, Jim and Richard were put in as the opening pair to build a good platform for the lower numbers batsman to either keep the run rate ticking over or get out to let the retirees return. So the costmary front foot defence was offered by both batsman in the first over and the second. Run rate was 11 after two. No panicking as the two have a good relationship of calling and running and building a score. Well that was what we thought. Both Jim and Richards had played indoor cricket this season albeit for the Over 40's and had scored runs. So there was a high level of optimism regarding the pair. Boys was that optimism misguided. What Wanstead got from the paring was an immaculate demonstration of how to play and miss and use the front foot defence, sorry and hit the ball straight to the fielder. Walthamstow were able to move their player around the field so much Richard and Jim couldn't miss them there were so many fielders in front of them. Fives over in and the Wanstead total was 21. in the sixth over, Walthamstow bowled a delivery, Richard played, missed, and the ball hit the pads. There was a loud appeal, only on this occasion it wasn't from the Walthamstow team, it was from the Wanstead side and the gallery (Gallery is Cliff and the spare umpire). The atmosphere when the appeal was rejected was simmering with resentment. The on field umpire was also a bit confused that Richards own teammates appealed for his dismissal. But he didn't lift a finger and so the anguish for the Wanstead fans and cricketing fans in general continued. By the end of over 8 the total had reached 37, leaving the run chase at 29 per over required. anyway the partnership was broken by Jim walking off of the field and appealing to Cliff (The scorer) that he be retired. With that door being slightly opened Nafeesa was sent in with instructions to run Richard out. Just like Botham did to Boycott. Luckily for Nafeesa, Richard served up a catch and was dismissed. There was much praising off the effort...not sure whether the praise was for Richard or the player who caught the ball. But anyway, the star adult was in the game, Gerard D. He was amazingly quick between the wickets. By the time of Gerard's arrvial the run rate was over 33 runs, not that the team was aware. Anyway, both batsman played and ran scoring much needed runs. Anyway Nafeesa was run out at the end of the penultimate over, and Ib entered the arena with a brand new bat. Which was very nice. It was so good in fact that Ib was caught trying to smack the ball into tomorrow, which meant the last man had to play a part. With more than 78 required, it was an impossible task, but in the last over 10 runs were scored, more than in any other over. But Wanstead still lost. What can I say? England have a new Test match paring in the waiting, Richard and Jim was practising for the outdoor season, given that we have lost the previous Wanstead C fixtures, a practice for the outdoor pair seems a logical thing to do. C'mon people that's the only silver lining I've got for this performance. We didn't bowl well, we didn't bat well, maybe...our fielding was out of the top draw on occasions, so there are some positives to take from this result. Forgetting all of the negatives, we still walked away after a bit of a laugh. And if you cant laugh you shouldn't be playing in the Wanstead C team, the A team can have you. They don't do laughing, only very serious no laughter, no smiling cricket. But hey ho. We still reached the semi finals. Only this time can we please win?
Is it too much to ask. Especially as Ramon isn't playing. What do you say team? Perhaps reach one final this season??
