Match report This is the first of three Matchplay Cup games. This is an U16 competition where we have entered a more junior U13/U14 side to get more experience of longer format cricket.

We started well, and Orsett were 39/3 off the first 10 overs. As the innings progressed though the extra strength and age of our opponents took hold, and their opener made a well constructed hundred. At one stage, we looked like chasing 300, so we did well to hold them to 240, taking five wickets in the final 10 overs, holding some good catches.

After 40 overs in the field on a hot day, chasing 240 was always going to be tricky. The extra bounce from their seamers put paid to the top 4 batsmen quite quickly. A mixture of good bowling, but also shot selection could have been better. A couple of badly judged run-outs then didn't help...We delayed the inevitable fairly effectively and the tail wagged a bit, recovering slightly from 45/7 to 88 all out. A telling stat is that last four batsmen faced 74 balls between them, whereas the top eight batsmen faced 75!

This will stand the boys in good stead in the future. We didn't give up at any stage. Many thanks to our hosts at Orsett for laying on a barbeque and a fine tea.
