Newham v Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Matchplay Cup on Sun 30 Jul 2017 at 14:00
Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Won by 90 runs

Match report This was the third of three Matchplay U16 games, where we are exposing the younger juniors to Matchplay 40 over cricket in the "Matchplay Cup" which is considered a junior competition to the "Matchplay Shield".

Sufficed to say, it has been a tough set of games. We have been frankly thrashed in the first two, with only short periods of being level or on top in these games.

So, coming to the final game, against an opponent who had heavily beaten the two teams who had already beaten us, it is fair to say that confidence was a bit low....the average age of Newham was certainly two years older than ours, possibly more...

The pitch was a bit wet, and you might normally think that you would field first. Our captain decided we'd bat first, mainly because he thought that was the way to get back to Overton quickly to watch the T20 finals.....

He was wrong. We batted patiently and carefully. They bowled badly. We were 58/3 off 20. Backed up by several careful partners Haaris batted solidly for a well judged 50, Haaris Raza and Harry threw the bat effectively at the end. We made 178 off 40 overs. Far more than we thought we would get.

At tea the mood was different. The boys had changed their minds. A show of hands demonstrated they all thought we could win. We had a strong bowling side. Hanzala and Tom had them at 22-5 off 9 superb overs, and they were stunned. The fielding was sharp and loud. Sledging is of course not encouraged at Wanstead, but having batted first, our boys were then an even match for their opposition, something which took them by surprise. A couple of sharp runouts, a few more excellent overs from Surya and Haaris and it was all over. Bowled out for 88.

We got back to Wanstead just in time to see the final six disappear into the churchyard. We missed the T20, but we had our own famous victory.

A fantastic performance, which vindicated us entering the competition, and when I look back on the 2017 season, will probably be the game I remember first. When this squad are playing Matchplay cricket in three years time, come and watch....it'll be awesome.
