Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Under 19 v Hornchurch Athletic U19 on Thu 27 Jul 2017 at 17.00
Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Won by default

Match report Given our consistently poor starts this season when batting, this is the match report I half expected to have to write but never wanted to.

Wanstead won the toss and elected to bowl with fears that the weather might mean a shortened game and a match decided on run rate. Hornchurch started strongly with 34 on the board after 5 overs with the loss of a single wicket to the two Finlays. It was not until the introduction of spin that any degree of control was achieved with Rafey taking 3 for 8 off 4 excellent overs. In fact, after the first 5 overs, the bowling was exceptionally tight, conceding only 34 runs off the last 10 overs and bowling the opposition out for 92 in the last over due to a combination of Faheem's 3 for 11 and a tidy run out provided by Robin.

Job done? Not on this wicket - which had seen a couple of heavy showers, the covers being fully occupied protecting the 1st XI strips for the weekend. The team chose this match to make the worst start they have ever made, losing 3 wickets for 14 in the power play and then playing out 3 maidens to leave us on 17 for 4 after 9 overs. This collapse brought together Manvir and Finlay CB who have shown themselves to be perhaps the most consistent batters in the side so far, if not always the highest scorers. They proceeded to put together an excellent 59 partnership (Manvir 28 off 35, Finlay 31 off 35) which nearly got us over the line before Finlay fell with the score on 76 in the 19th over. Unfortunately, he proved to be the first wicket down in a hat trick for Nathan Khelawon. A further 10 runs were added in the last over leaving us 6 runs short. That the side could bat so poorly and still be within a single stroke of drawing the match speaks volumes for the potential and depth of our batting.

There is a small chance, if the remaining group matches fall the right way, that we could still qualify for the quarter finals, thanks to the two heavy victories we have managed. If we do, we will need to take a hard look at how we approach the start of the innings.

CHANGE IN RESULT - ESSEX HAVE AWARDED THIS MATCH TO WANSTEAD DUE TO AN INADVERTENT BREACH OF COMPETITION RULES BY HORNCHURCH ATHLETIC
