Match report Walthamstow are exploring the possibility of establishing an U19 side and we were very happy to respond to their request for a friendly.

Batting first, Zain and Manvir started strongly, both retiring on 30 and 32 respectively. On a slow wicket, Karthigan chipped a leading edge to mid off with the score on 76, committing the sin of playing across the line. What happened next wasn't in the script as Mustafa's departure on 89 triggered an almighty collapse, the next 5 wickets falling for only 14 runs. All, by the way, demonstrating why playing across the line is such a bad idea on a chancy strip. As we were 2 players short due to miscommunication and a family bereavement, it was left to the returning Zain and Manvir take the score from 107 to 139 in the last five overs.

Wanstead started well in their defence of what seemed like a reasonable total with two quick wickets before the Walthamstow 3 and 4 dug in, making 27 and 32 respectively. Indeed, by the 16th over they were on 125 for 7 and looking firmly in command, despite an excellent 5 wickets from Karthigan. After a quick consultation, Jayden and Brandon were tasked with rectifying matters and did so admirably, conceding only 7 runs off the next 3 overs whilst taking 2 wickets. Manvir then stepped up to bowl the last with Walthamstow needing 8 to win with only 1 wicket left.Three runs were scrabbled off the first 2 deliveries before the pressure told and the last man was run out with the score on 135.

So - a tight finish and narrow win. On this evidence, Walthamstow will hold their own against most of the Met Region U19 sides and we wish them the best of luck next year.
