Batting first, the Herons looked in danger at 49 for 4 from 13 overs but a 239 5th wicket partnership between Matthew Smith and Bilal Patel took Wanstead to 293. Bilal Patel ended his inning with 131 with some majestic stroke play, supported by Matt Smith (95), who was later supported by Red Bull as his lack of fitness started to take its toll.

In response, Wanstead bowlers started slowly, with Upminster showing great attacking stroke play, ending the power play with 75 runs for no wicket. Good work from James F, Abhiraj and Ismael slowed the run rate however it was only when Jack Lord ran out the dominant opening bat, J Evans on 98 that Wanstead could relax with Nabeel seeing off the tail in exemplary fashion. Reflecting on the result a focus on reducing the extras will be needed if the Twos are to defend their title, with 7 no-balls, with each free hit going for either 4 or 6.

I would like to dedicate this win to Bilal's cousin, Usama Karbhari, who sadly passed away last week aged only 33. Usama started watching Bilal play his trade in the Twos last season and his support was warmly appreciated by the team. From the little I knew of him, he was a warm welcoming man who took immense pride in watching his cousin play and enjoyed the game of cricket. He would have been extremely proud of the character shown both by Bilal and the Wanstead team as they recaptured top spot.
