Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Lost By 27 runs

Match report Wanstead commemorate 150 years anniversary with a tight tussle with the Club Cricket Conference.

Monday 1st August marked an auspicious occasion with 150 years of history of Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club celebrated. The scene was set with the Wanstead Ladies taking on the Club Cricket Conference. The CCC, a club comprising of cricketers, from all over the counties scene. Captain Saba Nasim, normally a regular with the CCC, defiantly chose to wear the Wanstead kit for this occasion.

The toss was won by Wanstead who chose to field. Captaining the CCC, Hayley Arrol (Hertfordshire County) led out her ladies, opening with Sue Benson (Finchley) and Bhavika Gajipra (Harrow). Both began playing beautiful strokes with intent, hitting swift boundaries, before Gajipra fell for 15 runs off 25 balls, the score 26-1. Tight bowling from Nafeesa Aziz a right arm fast bowler and excellent fielding skills from Katie Harrison saw the visitors being restricted. It wasn’t until the nineteenth over when a run out by the captain Saba Nasim ensured the second wicket of Nehal Dave to fall with the score at 72-2 sparking a slight collapse, as wickets tumbled in quick succession leaving the CCC at 82-4 in 22.5 overs, with Captain Sue Benson helping to steady the innings, top scoring with a feisty 38 until the twenty-second over.

Two direct hits showed just how far the fast fielding and reactions of the Wanstead Ladies have developed with two superb runs of Dave and Dandool as well as Nafeesa bowling maiden overs. Wanstead’s tight bowling restricted the boundaries of the visitors albeit at times off-spinner Zainab Khan’s bowling came under attack. Despite a few mix-ups in the field, the visitors eventually posted a score of 138 for 6.

With a short interval break, lunch having been taken prior to the match, Wanstead began their innings in rain blighted, over-cast conditions. Openers Khan and Barrett who had opened a few times, could not have gotten off to the worse start, with Khan having Barrett run out in the first over. An omen some would say of things to come, however this brought Louise Poulter to the crease and slowly their innings began to balance as Khan struck three boundaries before being caught leaving the hosts on 22-2 in the third over.

The CCC known for their die-hard winning mentality applied pressure through their innings, as fast-bowlers with county level experience, including Bhavika Gajipra and Roxy Newman helped capture two wickets each.

Although some players made good starts, hitting quick boundaries, their success was short lived, Saba Nasim, quick scoring 12 off 11 balls and Aziz making 28.

As Wanstead slumped to 47-6, it was left to Hannah Newman and Nafeesa Aziz to try and steady the innings whilst clawing the girls back into the game. Having batted for 46 minutes, Newman attacked the leg-side patiently for boundaries with Aziz following suit with 28 off 57 balls whilst remaining at the crease for an hour and three minutes. The partnership saw swift singles, carefully and cautiously, taken as both girls were aware of the importance of their wickets remaining intact. Unfortunately the CCC had other ideas and quickly ended this courageous act of defiance and soon brought it to an end with Hannah being caught for 14 off 41 deliveries with the score 80-7. With both Amy Price and Roxy Newman storming in, keeping their line and length well disciplined, their success was aptly reflected in their bowling statistics.

Wanstead Ladies were skilfully restricted to 111 for 8 in 30 overs, with the Club Cricket Conference winning by 27 runs.

Despite the result, the day was more of a celebration and the chance for younger girls, aspiring to take up and participate in sport, to have fun and learn from the wealth of experience which the CCC has.

Well played to both teams and for playing the game in the true spirit of cricket.
