West Bergholt v Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Over 40's Indoor Team on Thu 15 Dec 2016 at 9.00 pm
Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Won
Match report
It is with immense pride that i announce the Over 40s indoor team (and i use the word team loosely) have managed to played their way into a semifinal match v Old Brentwood. This fixture v West Bergolt was the final league match of the Wanstead season and it was important for both teams. West Bergholt if they win would finish in the top 4, for Wanstead it was a similar proposition.
Before I do the ususal exemplary analysis of the match I would like to thank Sohail for answering a very late call to play. As for the rest of you, you know the score. So suck it up and get used to it.
This match was a very unusual match for a number of reasons. The most unusual aspect was that for some reason the fielders not only found they could throw the ball, but infact they actually hit the stumps much to the amazement of the the Umpires, opposition and themselves. There were 4 runs outs attributed to the wanstead fielders. This is most unusual, normally the pattern is Batsman hits the ball, Wanstead fielder collects the ball throws the ball in the general direction of the stumps and the ball misses, hits the wall and the opposition gets extra runs. Quite what happened in this match requires Mulder and Scully to investigate because it was truly out of the ordinary.
The toss was won by someone...no idea who, but Wanstead found themselves batting. Anyway, after some shocking shots from the top two, and I do mean shocking. JC played like he has never held a bat before and not the Essex leading run scorer of all time. So after much shouting from the gallery he retired not out after Alan. However, you might think that JC was awful, the next player in Jim, well he was entertaining. Jim's innings was amazing for all the wrong reasons. One over went, crap shot, crap shot almost out, crap shot six six, crap shot. JC at the other end was almost run out three times in the first over as was Jim. Jim eventually retired letting the middle order of Sohail and Ibrahim enters the arena. They didnt trouble the scoreboard at all apart from increasing the wickets taken. Ramon being last man in scored 1 run and ran himself out knowing that the hut had three players wiaitng to top up their scores. Ramon was keeping so wasn't really needed. Anyway, Wanstead thought they had got 118 runs and that went on to the target for West Bergholt. What followed in the Wanstad fileding was amazing
It all began with the fielder who stands at square (Ibrahim). As Ib says himself, his fielding job is to support the wall at square and not much else. Well on this occasion Ib found himself away from the wall collecting the ball and throwing at the one stump he could see. Well the West Bergholt player was odds on to get back and Alan and the keeper (Ramon) were positioning themselves to try and stop the ball hitting the wall, as is the normal reaction. Well, to everyone including the batsman the thought of Ib collecting the ball was a sight of amazment, but tcollecting and trowing was another shock to see. So Ib's throw hitting a single stump...I say it again, 'a single stump'. Well it took us all a few seconds to fully comprehend what had actually taken place. Ibrahim Aziz, had moved away from the wall, bent down and picked up the ball, got him self to an upright position and throw the ball and hits the only visible stump. Well, everyone (that includes Ib himself) was amazed and in shock. The west Bergholt player walked off wondering what had just happened. Ib apologised to the outgoing batsman and we all looked on in amazement.
One might have thought that this occurance was a fluke. However, JC who is another Wanstead player with a history throwing and missing, did the same as Ib, threw the ball and hit the stumps, running out another West Bergholt player. More shock and amazement ensues. JC repeats this again, so thats three West Bergholts players run out. More run outs follow and in the end, West Bergholt ran out of players and Wanstead won. The teams shake hands, with each other and the umpires are thanked for their effort.
We return to the dressing room in shock and aruge the finer points of the victory and conclude that it was the leadership of the captain that facilited the victory. Who the captain was this evening was also up for debate, All I can say is that it was the right person made the critical calls during the match. And they were the captain of distinction.
To end this report all that can be added well done to the Over 40's. Youve played some very challenging matches and come through. Some of the younger teams could take heed of some of the performances youve put in this season. Long may you all continue.
