Southend on Sea CC 3rd XI (Timed) v Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club 5th XI on Sat 11 May 2019 at 12.30pm
Match was Drawn - 6 Points (4 bowling and 2 batting points)

Match report Wanstead 5XI got their season off to a really positive start last Saturday (May 11th 2019) by gaining a draw at Southend on Sea 3XI. All worries that the long trip would bare no cricket was on all players mind as at the meet time of 10am it was pouring at Overton Drive. However the weather only had an impact later on.

Skipper Drew Osborn won the toss in damp conditions and elected to bowl first with the hope that the wicket will offer some early assistance and that the forecast showers will disrupt the batsman with the expected regular stoppages. However the rain stayed away throughout the first innings and the pitch played very true and fair. However the young Herons of Aeron (1-33 off 8overs ), Harith (0-16 off 5 overs ) Aryan (0-23 off 7 overs) and the Experienced Alan (3-65 off 16 overs) contained the scoring with Tharusha being the highlight in getting 4 wickets for just 22 off 6 overs and we ended up bowling out Southend for 225 in 49.4 overs.

As the boys headed into the dressing room there was a real feeling that the score was very achievable in 45 overs at a click over 5 runs an over on a high scoring ground but then the heavens that have been threatening all day decided to open. At tea it seemed highly unlikely any more cricket would feature.

Miraculously only 35 minutes and 10 overs were lost in the match which did not do any favours for either side as our 5 an over target now became a 6 and a half an over effort. Also the pitch and outfield did get slower on top of this with no covers available for the square and with no real fault of our own changed the dynamic of the game. A gutsy 30 from Alan and a classy 25 from Sriram with help from Anish 18* and the ever consistent Jon 11* helped us achieve 2 batting points that took our totel to 6 points something we never have achieved playing at Southend before.

As the players shook hands in what was a game that was played in fantastic spirit as always with Southend the feeling from both sides was 'what if it had not rained' as with the same conditions and the extra 10 overs all 3 results were very possible but in the end a hard battling draw was very fair.

A promising start and lets hope we can build on this.
