Match report “The 7XI begin a new chapter n Wanstead history”

The inaugural 7XI match was a rollercoaster of a fixture even before a ball was bowled. At the beginning of the week the opposition was Hainault, who decided they were playing someone else. So in comes the Heronettes and then they are bumped for an exciting fixture against Nazeing Common.
The skipper ‘Chips Chesney’ won the toss on what was a wet pitch (at Fairlop, a town that is twinned with Vostok, Antarctica) and decided to bat first. The 7’s batting line-up looked something like a “Fathers and sons” team sheet. Anyway, in walk the debut openers, Matloob Piracha and Joe Nichols. Overhead they had the fly past of the Trooping of the colour, and a Spitfire buzzed around the Fairlop pitches welcoming the Wanstead 7XI openers to the cricket world. Both openers had been part of the 7’s planning and had been waiting for this moment. Well their moment had arrived and they both played the part expected of them magnificently. Joe played the role of the blocker, keeping the Nazeing bowlers at bay, whilst Matloob found he could put willow to leather and hit some majestic boundaries. The openers put on 53 before one of them fell. So a solid start had been made, Matloob scoring 32 and Joe 23. ‘Chips Chesney’ was not an unhappy skipper at this point. On the departure of Matloob in walks to the crease the unlikely hero of the day Finlay Chesney-Brown. More of the hero bit later. Finlay (U13) scores a reasonable 14 with a splashing of good shots but gets caught. On the departure of Joe, in comes the Vice Captain, Mazham Ali, socially known ‘Ali’, in the 7’s ‘Del-Boy’. Well Del Boy did not trouble the scorers too much as he successfully cut his first ball to the fielder in the gully. In walks Khan, a player known for his ferocious swinging of the bat. Ball 1, 4 runs, ball two, defended. The shock on the boundary line was palpable. Khan defends? This is unheard of in the 7’s camp. All through the winter training Khan has been smashing the bowlers; ball after ball straight back at them. Batting with Khan at this point was another debutante to Adult cricket, Jeevan Ghataore (U13). Jeevan playing nicely scores a delightful 4 to get off the mark, some singles come and then calls for a two. For a scampering U13 it would be easy. But for a veteran Khan it was a second too far and an excellent throw sees Khan continue to run back to the pavilion. Khan is seen off with a modest 11 runs to his name. Anyway more will be heard of Khan later. On the departure of Khan in walks an International hockey player, Jeevan’s father Jagdeep, also known as Jag. Jag referred to this moment as one of his highlights, batting with his son. Jag score of 17 was a volatile innings. Memories of Harold Larwood spring to mind. Jag was peppered with balls that pitched and rose, one Jag takes on the chest, down he goes, another one hits him on the elbow, he retires hurt. However despite the onslaught, Jag has returned his best score for the season so far, 17 and a proud dad walk’s to the pavilion to get some ice. Whilst Jag was fending off the deliveries Jeevan has succumbed to a quicker ball and been bowled. However Jeevan has entered into the score book his first adult cricket score and returns to the pavilion. Two more sons of fathers are now at the crease, Sifth Ali and Conor Nichols, two more first timers to adult cricket. Sifth hit some majestic shots to return to the pavilion with a score of 10 and Conor added 1 to the total. However, Conor’s contribution with the bat was less significant compared to his role in the field, more of that later.
The over’s had been rattling through, and the Nazeing bowling attack had kept the runs down and the skipper thought that in 45 overs, 200 was a possibility. Nazeing had restricted the total to a lot less than that, and on the departure of Conor and Sifth sees the last pairing of Simon ‘Mr Slater’ Bottomley and Ramon Chesney. The two talk at the crease to set a score of 150 with 2 overs left. This meant that risks had to be taken by. A quick 16 by the skipper sees him getting the score to 158 and then is bowled. Jag returns to the crease but does not increase his score and watches Mr Slater get caught to end the Wanstead innings.
The skipper and team depart to the pavilion to taste the excellent Fairlop teas and plan the next part of this tale. After cups of hot tea and sandwiches and cakes the Wanstead 7XI return to the pitch to defend 158.
The opening attack for Wanstead was obvious; Khan bowling into the wind from the football pitches end and Matloob bowling down the slope. It’s the fourth over by the time Nazeing’s first wicket tumbles to Matloob. Both Khan Matloob bowl extremely well. The Nazeing openers, playing and missing, the ball going over the middle stump or missing the edge of the bat by a whisker. There was loads of ooh’s and aah’s from the field. Also a number of LBW shouts where made but none were given during this opening spell. After 10 over’s of Matloob and Khan were seen off, Matloob’s figures at this point 5-0-5-1, and Khan’s 5-0-10-0, the Nazeing score had only gone to 38 so the skipper switches the attack. Into the attack comes Finlay Chesney-Brown and Joe Nichols. Joe as his skipper expected bowls well and finishes his spell with excellent figures of 5-0-14-2. Finlay being an U13 can only bowl 4 overs and finishes his spell with excellent figures of 4-0-15-3. The Nazeing middle order had collapsed and with Sifth returning figure of 4-0-20-0 and Jeevan returning figures of 4-0-6-0. The U13’s in the attacked had reduced the Nazeing team sheet to 88 for 8. The skipper was looking at what he thought was going to be a good inaugural win. The tight bowling from the youngsters was something to admire and shows that the depth of talent in Wanstead Cricket club runs deep.
Behind the stumps Conor Nichols was keeping in his first adult match. In reality this is his only second season of keeping in his cricket career and he has taken to it like a duck to water. Conor was taking some seriously quick deliveries form Khan and Matloob at the beginning and at the end in the failing light. In addition to the catches, Conor also had the speed of hand to run out a Nazeing player. A great all round effort by Conor. An effort that his father and skipper were very proud of.
With 8 down Nazeing where looking to loose, that is until the appearance at the crease of the Nazeing Captain, Paul and Monks (I think). The two of them started to block and build what could only be called was a match winning partnership. They played brilliantly. They blocked and picked off the bad balls. They began to really put our bowlers under pressure so much so that the defeat they were staring at became a stroll to victory unless Wanstead could do something. Skipper Chesney had a dilemma, his vice captain had bowled 4 over and returned figures of 4-0-11-0 and the partnership was getting stronger and victory for Nazeing was looking very likely. A call went out to his opening bowlers again to try and break this strong partnership. Khan came back and tried to blast the paring apart, this did not work. Matloob came back was hit for 10. The winning line was in sight for Nazeing and they would have deserved it had they got there. However, Matloob pulled himself out of the attack after a discussion with the skipper. Back into the attack comes the hero of the hour, Finlay Chesney-Brown with his swinging deliveries. Ball three of his 6th over swings viciously and takes out the Nazeing captains stumps. Up goes Wanstead arms and voices. The partnership was broken, in comes the Nazeing no 11 and sees out the rest of the over. Khan continues to fire down balls at the other end, Nazeing are within 15runs of victory, they are pushing for singles and defending really well. Wanstead are fielding for everything. The kids are putting in a 110% effort and the adults are biting their nails. The win is still on for Nazeing, they have 5 overs in which to get 12 runs. Wanstead could smell victory again and their voices had returned. In comes Finlay for his 7th over. Four runs are taken off the first 5 deliveries and Nazeing are slowly heading towards a most unlikely win. Finlay’s last bowl of the over swings in late, the Nazeing no 11 (Woods) misjudges it and hits an easy catch to Ali at short mid-on. Wanstead wins. This becomes a match that in the end was an intense cricket match. Thank you Nazeing and thank you to Finlay Chesney-Brown. All the team celebrate loudly as we all expected to lose. Team and Skipper (Finlay’s dad) are ecstatic with the result. Nazeing are slightly shell shocked, their captain applauds what he calls the miracle ball, as they thought they were going to win.
Finlay Chesney-Brown ended with figures of 7-0-16-5 and receives the match ball for his effort along with his first 5er in adult cricket. This should increase his Fantasy cricket value. Although individual efforts have been mentioned in this report, the first outing of the 7XI has shown that the adult in the club can play well with the young players and that the young players can contribute many things to the adult matches. Well done 7XI, may this be just the beginning of something that can continue what the 6XI have done for the last few seasons.
