Match report This is the match report that is a tale that begins with the Umpire telling off JC for being too loud in the gallery to JC bowling with the venom of a 25 year old and taking out the tail of the opposition, crash bang wallop, more points in the bag for Wanstead.
Last night was the final for the Wanstead run out player of the year and if you look at the Wanstead innings it was won by the only player to not get dismissed by a run out. So the big round of applause goes to the undisputed Run out king...."Alan 'I can call well, its the others that cant hear or run properly' Lord".
The match begins (again just like in the previous match) of JC going to have the toss up with the opposing Capt and keeping the outcome a secret from his team. So while the rest of the team are in the hall warming up assuming because the opposition hasn't appeared that Wanstead were fielding. JC appears and begins to warm up for his bowling. Matloob is taking to spot as keeper for the warm up...well what he lacks in skills he possesses in stupidity. Why on earth would you try and stop a JC Full power fast bowl without keeper gloves? In what universe is this the right thing to do? Well , more of this kind of antics later.
Well JC eventually decided to let the team into the secret that they were supposed to be batting so off they traipsed into the dressing room to gather their gear and decide who was going to operate the now infamous scoring machine. Now for some reason, everyone had put on their pads, which for the batsman playing at numbers 4,5 & 6, they don't normally trouble the scorer. For some unknown reason, this move was prophetic as what follows sort of explains why Alan has won this prestigious award.
The Wanstead innings began slow and boy I mean really slow. It was like watching the opening day of a test match with Chris Tavare and Geoff Boycott defending their wickets. The Wanstead holding pen was shouting motivational words to them, with encouraging comments from the scorer as well.
Its always impressive when a Wanstead team supports their team mates in this positive way. Anyway, eventually the openers started to run some singles and eventually and much procrastination JC retired on 25 and in went Jim. One run later and it started, by that I mean Alan's quest for the evening...to run out all of his team mates. So Jim has gone, in goes Matloob, who is run out next ball. In goes Ramon, he gets one run and he is run out by Alan. Wanstead were howling with laughter at what was happening. The opposition could not have asked for a better Wanstead batting show.
I'm going to take some time here to describe some of the dismissals that Alan and the others found themselves in and you the reader can make your own judgment as to whether Alan deserves this prestigious award. So , lets examine Jim's dismissal, opposition bowls, Jim hits the ball towards Mid On, calls for the run, Alan says nothing and remains in his crease, Jim sees this and realises his innings is over, continues his run, just heading off to the dressing room pitch. The next run out, was that of Matloob Piracha. Matloob defends his opening ball, and sees that nobody in the opposition appears to be wanting to field the ball so calls for a quick single and sets off. Half way down the pitch he looks at Alan who appears to be smoking a cigarette and enjoying this bout of inactivity. He wasn't moving, he was too comfy in his crease. So Matloob, just like Jim continued his run off the pitch to be greated with a laughing bunch of teammates plus one scorer who was joining in with the batting sides obvious calamitous show. In comes Ramon, who had ambitions of adding to the Wanstead total. The total wasn't big an the opposition could see the distinct possibility of having a very easy win. So Ramon aces his first delivery, taps the delivery into the corner and take a single. Next delivery, he taps the ball behind and calls for the run and heads down towards the other end where Alan is standing. Yes, you read, correctly, Alan is still in his crease, not moving. Ramon sees this and knows that he is never going to get back to his crease so begins to veer towards the holding pit thinking that he is run out. Now chaos ensues, Alan calls for the run and sets off for the keepers end, Ramon has almost stopped running and sees Alan going for the single...Alan has passed him, The ball has appeared over Ramon's shoulder and hit the stumps. Well done Alan, another Wanstead player has been run out. The innings appeared to becoming to quick close, there was only Fayyaz and JC to come back before it was all over for Wanstead. Everyone was thinking that this will be over in minutes so Ramon heads back to the dressing room. Wanstead were 34 for 4. Well somehow, Wanstead made it to 75 all out, Alan having run out JC and Fayyaz on his way to getting caught. The details of how they were run out are sketchy as, but its probably player calls for a run and sets off, Alan stays in crease, other player run out. So the end of the innings reads Alan 5 Wanstead 0.Rayleigh wader off to he dressing room to contemplate their innings and they must have felt quietly confident that if Wanstead could implode once, that they could do it again.
The Raleigh openers take to the field...well the Graham Gooch Hall, and begin their chase of the 75...7 runs an over, certainly a gettable total and a lot less than the previous total Wanstead set last week. JC opens the bowling, its quick and there is a number of playing and missing by the batsmen. Runs are few, they are not taking the quick singles. The overs are ticking by, no wickets but no runs so Fayyaz come to the bowling crease. First ball, top edge keeper catches, wicket down. Third ball, same again, Rayleigh 4 runs on the total, 2 wickets down. Bowled Fayyaz caught keeper. If you have read the previous reports of theses fixtures I have a made a lot of comments about the keeper, but today , I am just going to say that The combination of Fayyaz and Chesney started the end of the Rayleigh innings and that accolade is enough. Notwithstanding that all the catches he took were exceedingly difficult and the second catch was juggled expertly into the gloves. So that is enough of the keepers antics for the moment.
Rayleigh are reeling at the moment, and into the attack comes Matloob Piracha. At the end of his over, the scoreboard had moved from 4 to 41, so despite what the bowling figures say, something very dodgy happened in that over. Everyone saw the ball be despatched to all corners of the hall, yet his figures say he only gave away 13 runs. Something very fishy has happened that this author cant explain. Well, he could but would face a three match ban for what he would write...Isn't that right Alan. (Alan is the expert in receiving Bans for writing and saying things to people, so I defer to your advice here Alan.)
With three over to go , the total was certainly looking out of Rayleighs grasp, but at the crease was a Rayleigh player who was going to give the chase a try. He was chasing down the track and trying to hit Matloob, and Jim. He was hitting them but straight to fielders, so runs were still few and far between. Jc returns to his at the death bit. Only this time, he was bowling at a phenomenal pace. It was quick, so quick that the Rayleigh didn't stand much of a chance. JC took out the last wickets without the batsman adding to the Raleigh total and Wanstead won a match they thought Rayleigh would win with ease.
The teams shake hands on what actually turned out to be a very exciting match, that both thought Raleigh would win. It goes to show that any team with this skilled keeper in it will be successful.
To say this keeper is good, well should he decide to hang up his gloves, they will be hard to replace.
(Hang on a second, this was a team effort, the keeper didn't win the match on his own. That's just rude...Ed) Okay Ed, others contribute to the match but was their contribution as significant as the Keeper's?. Some remarks from the others would be helpful in resolving this. So I will leave some space for their contributions...







I waited an hour and nothing was offered by the other players, so I'm going with what's been said already. The team are two for two and looking at last nights performance with Alan in the team, very lucky that they are two for two. With the Run out king honing his skills last night, the Wanstead team have a bleak but entertaining future ahead of them. What's next you ask? For me a cup of tea and work. Oh you mean for the Team? Well another match is next week when the team is back in Chelmsford parading their cricketing skills. Until then..adieu
