Saturday morning, Pastures Youth Centre Leytonstone. After a rollercoaster ride of trying to get a team together, the author finds that he has to play as finding 6 players for this fixtures was rather difficult. Anyway. The team were on a roll. Two good wins from the previous two fixtures had moved the veterans up the league table. One might say that they were looking respectable. Anyway the average age of the players is well over 40. (The way some of them move one might say that they look over 70).
To the match, after much debate it was decided that we do better chasing a total. So after a disagreement with the oppo's captain (they wanted to bat first), Wanstead duly lost the toss and had to bat.
The opening pair was Chris P and Jim. They both started off in their usual Geoffrey Boycott/Chris Tavare test match show the bowler the face of the bat style. After a while and a lot of abuse from the gallery they decided to hit the walls and score some runs. Things were looking really good until Chris P was caught backing up too far and a direct hit sent him back on a score of 24. Into the fray comes Chris L who lasts a while for 11 before being stumped. Jim gets caught for 22. Matloob decided that he needs to stay fresh for bowling so runs himself out. Ib gets stranded on 0 because Ramon hits the ball straight to the fielders except for a last ball six. There was palpable holding of breath due to amazement. It was quite good, even if I do say so myself. So the innings closes with Wanstead making 71. A lot more than they usually get.

So now to the Frenford response.

Seventy one is a score that requires some effort but is achievable. So it was game on for both teams. Frenford had a team of a lot of young players whereas Wanstead is just wily and old, (well some are just old), but the bowlers had some skill. After some excellent bowling Frenford were 31/5. It all but seemed a formality until the bowlers decided we will try and bowl rubbish. So the wides started to appear, byes as well. Out of the final total of 54 of the Frenford inning, 25 of them were wides in a total of 33 extras. Had the Wicket keeper not been on his toes Frenford would have won easily on extras. Hark I hear some yelling from the Wanstead Vets...it gets ignored as its just rude whats being yelled and has no substance and are said out of jealousy and bitterness underlying the lack of cricketing ability and understanding. Anyway, eventually after a lot of playing and missing the final wicket fell and Wanstead Veterans have now played 4 won 3. A somewhat different position from last season, played 4 lost 4.
What Wanstead can take away form this result is that no matter if its a 50 over match or a 12 over match, the opening pair cant hit the ball off the square until the 8th over. Which means that the rest of the team are doomed.
