Herons retain the title on a Magic Monday

26 Aug 2010

We followed up our great victory in the CCC Cup earlier this month by retaining the Essex League Cup on Bank Holiday Monday, 30 August with a victory over local rivals, Loughton.   Arfan won the toss (for a change) and invited Loughton to bat.  The ever young Arif Saeed and the genuinely young Maurice Chambers tied them down to less than three an over with excellent opening spells.  The introduction of Zain Shahzad started the wickets tumbling.  Bowling a very tight line and moving the ball through the air and off the pitch, he took four wickets at three an over.   All our other bowlers were equally as effective as these three at stopping them scoring, so when the seriously old Fayyaz came on they were compelled (unsuccessfully) to try to hit him.  As usual, he came out on top and Loughton were eventually all out for 150.  Despite losing wickets occasionally, our batsmen chased down the target with lots of overs left and WE WON THE CUP.   John Chambers was yet again the bedrock of the innings with a stylish 46 not out but Christian Burgess 's knock of 43 in rapid time settled the course of the game..  Arfan, Milan, Mervyn and Adnan all contributed with effective cameos.
Magic Monday?? Well that morning, our Under 11's beat Buckhurst Hill in the Final of the Hayden Davis Cup (the Premier Under 11 trophy) posting a challenging 120 off their 20 over. (120 challenging?   Well it is when it was posted on a wet wicket and when batsmen have to retire at 25).   Buckhurst Hill U11's found it more than challenging as they failed to get close to the required total.
And what about our women whilst all this was going on?   Well, they went to Barnet and won a competitive 6 a side tournament there, winning all their games.
