Older Boys Complete the Hat Trick

19 Sep 2010

Our Older boys completed their hat trick of major Essex titles (Cox & KIngs Cup; Peters Cup & the Matchplay trophy) when our Under 16's retained the Matchplay title at the County Ground, Chelmsford today (Sunday 19th September) by beating Brentwood in the Final.
Ayush Singh won the toss (hooray!) and elected  to bat. In partnership with Rehan Hassan, they then both scored 50 & put on 100 before they both departed in rapid succession.  This made the way for Hamza Hussain and Jonathon Das who scored very rapidly before getting out and this good work was continued by Adam Lord who stroked the ball to all parts  of the field (including the game's only 6) which allowed us to finish on 217 for 8.
In reply, Brentwood started very brightly until Adam Lord struck with a crucial wicket with the score on 38 aided by a spectacular catch by Jahansher. Adam then outdid this effort by holding an equally super catch in the deep. Giri Rathakrishnan came on and bowled a very tight spell keeping the opposition well below the required rate but the introduction of our spinners stopped Brentwood in their tracks.   Aron Nijjar bowled his 8 overs taking 2 for 18; Rehan bowled his 8 for 30 runs and Jahansher Akbar finished the job taking 3 for 44.  This just left Adam to complete an excellent day with bat, ball and in the field by cleaning out the tail and we were MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONS AGAIN.
It was a terrific team effort to which the whole team contributed. We batted bowled and fielded outstandingly well.   Jonathon enjoyed his birthday with three smart stumpings which set the standard for the rest of the lads.   Brentwood were worthy, very sporting opponents who pressed us all the way to the end but we were slightly too good for them on the day.
