Match report Our fifth eleven continued its poor start to the season with a loss against Chingford. Despite several people being overcome with dropsy, our fielders did well to restrict our opponents to 213 for four off of 47 overs, despite it looking at one stage as though we would be looking at a total in excess of 250 off of 45. Peter Apps bowled better than his eventual return of 3 for 53 would suggest. With a little luck he could have had a five for.

In reply, wickets fell at alarmingly regular intervals until Tom Mah brought some stability to one end. His best efforts seemed as though they would be wasted until a late, lengthy partnership with Trevor Hebden seemed to give us some hope. (This partnership is Wanstead’s example of the tortoise and the hare! The only reason Trevor wasn’t lapped running between the wickets was because of his plaintive cry of “Just the one” every time Tom hit the ball to the far distant boundary). After Trevor was dismissed, Tom was very smartly stumped for an outstanding 84. All of our opponents agreed that he had deserved a hundred for this knock in such difficult circumstances. The last few wickets then tumbled quickly and we were eventually all out for 164.

We lost but we had the man of match in Tom Mah – with 0 for 11 off 5 he was by far the games most economical bowler; with 84 runs its joint highest scorer and he can field just a bit too!
