Match report WANSTEAD left Gallows Corner frustrated on Saturday after they failed
to secure Gidea Park's final wicket that would have given them a deserved
win against their fellow high flyers.

The herons were inserted to bat first and took advantage of the benign
conditions to post a very useful 267-5 from 65 overs. No batsman failed and
a top score of 71 was posted by John Chambers who in the course of the
innings reached 10,000 League runs, all scored in the top division in a
career stretching back to 1988.

Teenager Raihan Ahmed notched up a fine 65, skipper Arfan Akram made
38 and useful contributions came from Chris Laas (25), Mervyn Westfield (20)
and the two not-out batsmen, Hassan Chowdhury and Maurice Chambers who
finished on 13 and 11 respectively.

Andrew Berry was the pick of the home bowlers, returning fine figures
of 4-61 from his 19 over spell.

Despite receiving 60 overs Gidea Park never looked like making a fight
of it and having tumbled to 159-9 following two wickets in consecutive balls
by Mo Fayyaz, they managed to survive the final eight overs thanks to Mike
Allen and Berry, who finished on undefeated scores of 44 and eight
respectively.

Maurice Chambers was the most successful bowler with a fine effort of
5-49 from 14 overs. Wanstead skipper used Akram used five other bowlers in
an effort to win, but ultimately to no avail.

Reflecting on events Akram said: "It was a very frustrating afternoon,
because having played all the cricket we certainly deserved to win.

"I was however very pleased for John Chambers for hitting a fantastic
landmark on Saturday. He is probably the best cricketer in the Essex Leagues
and is certainly a real asset to our club."
