Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club BU10s v Edmonton CC on Sun 21 May 2006 at 9.30
Match was Abandoned

Match report “Duck!” echoed around the salubrious and picturesque Overton Ground setting as I was standing as the square leg umpire in one of my first games taking the under 10 team a year or so ago. As a new kid on the block I managed to refrain from pointing out, pedantically, that they were in fact geese. Little did I realize that the players involved in the under 13 game on the other pitch were helpfully pointing out that the ball from their game was heading towards my head. Why mention this when writing about an under 10 game at Nutter Lane? Well the only alien ball that one has to worry about at our new ground is the errant tennis one that flies onto the outfield from the neighbouring tennis courts. For the players it was their first taste of another pleasant cricket ambience where they are fortunate to experience a first class set up.

The overcast skies accompanied the toss which was won by the Edmonton captain, who elected to bowl first. Thomas and Sam laid the foundations for a decent overall total with a fine opening stand. Conor came in , hit a couple of scorching boundaries and pushed the run rate along with some aggressive running between the wickets. The opposition captain ran out Conor with a superb throw from the square leg boundary. The remaining batsmen pushed the score along with Neel hitting a glorious cover drive along the floor in textbook fashion. The lads had done really well to reach 93 with a sodden outfield preventing the ball from travelling great distances.

Jack bowled the second over really well and was unlucky not to get a wicket with several excellent deliveries. The Edmonton opening pair was retired and Edmonton looked quite comfortable at this stage. Conor and Thomas tied them down with some accurate bowling but then came “Deadly Duncan” with a devastating spell. Indeed Duncan was on a hat-trick in his first over. His hat-trick ball caught the outside edge and unfortunately fell just short of Conor. With hindsight maybe that should read, “fortunately” as he would have had to buy the team, plus coach, an orange juice if he had been successful! Conor brilliantly ran out the opposition captain with a direct hit from short mid wicket which kept the momentum with us. Despite freezing cold hands Jake and Matthew fielded with their normal efficiency and commitment which made the game more difficult for Edmonton. At this point I would like to mention Kunal’s fielding and bowling. Kunal bowled one over uphill and the other downhill yet he performed both equally well. Kunal’s throwing from distance is a sight to behold and an example to the team. Harry at this point took a very good catch as wicket keeper and must be commended for his effort behind the stumps in his first game wearing the big gloves.

Alas, like the final episode in “24’ all good things must come to an end. Tony looked pleadingly from the boundary edge and Matthew’s dad looked as though he had just returned from on a trawler from a turbulent North Sea fishing expedition. I was actually worried that children might witness their fathers crying as a result of frostbite! With the opposition on 62-6 with 5 overs remaining and the game in an interesting position, the umpires decided to end proceedings.

A big thanks to all the parents who helped out with drinks, warm-ups, lifts, scoring etc. Even if the boys could not warm your limbs I am sure that they warmed your hearts with their attitude, commitment and impeccable behaviour. I cannot wait for the next fixture at our new exciting venue.
