Scorecard

Hornchurch v Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club 5th XI on Sat 07 Jun 2008 at 1pm
Match was Drawn

Match report A COMPLETELY negative batting display from Hornchurch meant the fifth XI had to settle for a winning draw.
Put into bat in some very favourable bowling conditions, Wanstead initially struggled against the highly disciplined new ball attack.
Andrew Osborn, Usman Mirza and Adnaan Bohardien all fell cheaply as the Herons limped to 35-3 from the first 15 overs.
Dev Patel looked to be in good touch but well caught on 31 and Sanjay Batra could only offer brief resistance as the home side looked in complete control.
In what was always going to be a low scoring game Ewan Ferguson chipped in with another useful 30, but it was youngsters Sarfraz Janjua (36) and Khaled Ahmed (42) who really turned the game for the visitors.
The pair added 74 for the seventh wicket and their partnership meant whatever happened the Herons would have a score they could defend.
As they increased the run rate the home side became more and more frustrated in the field and the level of sledging became unacceptable for this, or indeed any, level of cricket.
However, Simon Osborn, Abhinav Sanghi and Faghrie Peters stuck at the task to scrape the score up to 200 when the final pair walked off with three balls remaining to take maximum batting points. A fine achievement considering the damp pitch and slow outfield.
In reply Hornchurch seemed more concerned with not losing than trying to win the game and set out right from the start to block, and block, and leave.
Peters struck early to give Wanstead hope but when wicket keeper “batsman” Bob Roberts refused to walk after apparently being well caught behind the visitors knew they would face an uphill task to win this match.
The decision was particularly harsh on Andrew Osborn who had another fine game behind the stumps.
Yet the Heron’s stuck at their task and Ahmed and Bohardien each snared a wicket as Wanstead steadily, but slowly worked their way through the innings.
Desperate to get as many overs in as possible during the available time Wanstead showed lots of enthusiasm in the field changing ends quickly. The two teams respective ambitions were demonstrated by the two over rates, Hornchurch bowling 51.3 overs in three and a half hours rather poor compared to Wanstead’s 42 in just over two hours.
Sanghi looked dangerous despite struggling with his run up to take two wickets, including Roberts who was caught by Patel – much to the delight of Captain Osborn.
Janjua returned to the attack at the end to take two more wickets and ensure the side picked up three bowling points.
