Match report This was an important match for the young Herons with the winners progressing to the quarter finals of the Matchplay, so it was all or nothing. Wanstead won the toss, with Burgess' 100% record left intact, and chose to bat first. After a flying start with 12 coming of the first over, Wanstead received an early blow losing Burgess for 12. Saleemi followed shortly after for 15 with a dubious LBW decision. Hutchings batted well for 18 and then was caught and Wanstead found themselves struggling on 85-5. Velani was brought to the crease and built an innings with a number of batsmen batting around him. Chaudhri knocked up a quick 22 and Patel batted well for 23. Eventually Velani was bowled for 60, a mature innings and one which the team were very grateful for. Khawaja also batted well coming in at number 10 and scoring 21 not out.
Wanstead ended up with 228, a very good score considering early wickets were lost, and knew they had to bowl and field well to make sure of their progression in this competition.
Chaudhri started brightly swinging the ball early on and got 0-20 in his first spell of 5 overs. Ellis-Grewal was the pick of the bowlers with a first-class display getting 4-9 of 8 overs. Burgess bowled tightly earning 2-21 of 6 overs. The game was always in the hands of the Wanstead players, but Burgess was given a fright mid-way through the opposition's innings when a couple of their players started to hit out, but the game was soon pulled back despite a few dropped catches, and a fielding performance which was not up to the normal standards. Hassan and Velani both bowled well and both getting 1-29, before Khawaja finished the game.
A great result for Wanstead and one which takes them through to play Hadleigh and Thundersley in the quarter finals. A performance which was satisfying and showed the depth of Wanstead’s batting but a performance which showed there was still much to be improved on.
